UNDAF outcome 3: To improve the quality, relevance and coverage of education

educationBhutan provides free basic education and is on track towards achieving the education-related MDGs.The modern education system, introduced in 1960, has grown dramatically, from just 11 primary schools with 500 students to some 502 primary and secondary schools with 152,194 students and 5,372 teachers today. Also net primary enrolment has jumped sharply in a very short period, from 53 percent in 1998 to 83.7 percent in 2007. Education is recognized as a condition for achieving social, cultural and economic goals as articulated in Gross National Happiness strategy. However, challenges remain in increasing access to schools, improving school facilities and enhancing quality education. Education also requires a multilevel approach.

Currently, the UN agencies are working closely with the government in institutional capacity building of Ministry of Education, and capacity building of teachers and parents. Focus is also on:

  • Promoting child friendly schools
  • Supporting school feeding programmes
  • Enhancing water and sanitation facilities at schools
  • Enhancing national capacity to revise and implement the educational curricula
  • Increase school enrolment, particularly for girls, through improved facilities and school feeding
  • Strengthen national capacity to address the emerging challenges faced by young people
