Although Bhutan joined WHO in March 1982, the country’s engagement with Bhutan started in September 1978 with the International Conference on Primary Health Care. Bhutan formally adopted the Alma Ata Declaration of ‘Health for All,’ in 1979, as the guiding principle for the development of modern health services in the country. WHO provides policy advice and technical support to the Ministry of Health and other partners, build health system capacity and assist the Government of Bhutan to monitor health trends and to develop policies, strategies and plans for expanding access to health services and improving the health of people of Bhutan.
